FAQs and Pricing
Q: My front teeth are perfectly healthy and normal, but I don't like how they look. Can anything be done?
A: Yes - A lot. For example, the front part of the teeth can be covered with a thin, good looking material called "porcelain laminate" that alters the teeth's appearance. Before deciding on this or other cosmetic changes, however, Dr. Lipetsker will sit down with you and "paint" your teeth with a temporary material that will give you both an accurate picture of the end result. Dr. Lipetsker loves doing cosmetic work, so do not hesitate to ask!
Q: I heard that teeth whitening does not really work and that it does not last at all. Is that true?
A: Teeth whitening DOES work! But whitening teeth is analogous to getting a tan - some people tan more and quicker then others, and their tan lasts longer. While your teeth will always remain whiter than they were originally, some patients do "touch ups" at home for a day or two, once or twice a year.
Q: Is it true that wisdom teeth always have to be removed:
A: NO! Actually, this usually depends on the size of your jaw - whether or not it is big enough to accommodate the late arrivals, as wisdom teeth usually don't appear until age 16. If there is not enough space for them, the wisdom teeth may become infected and start to hurt. From an exam and x-ray, however, your dentist can see the position of the incoming teeth and suggest the appropriate course of action.
Q: What is a root canal?
A: Nerves grow inside channels called "canals". When the nerve gets inflamed, it is sometimes necessary to remove the nerve and fill the canal with a special material. The dentist will then restore your tooth to make it stronger. This restoration is usually called "post /core and crown".
Q: Does a root canal hurt?
A: No. With proper anesthesia you should not feel any pain at all. Root canals get their reputation not because of any painful treatment but because by the time a root canal becomes necessary (usually because of an abandoned and forgotten cavity), the tooth already hurts.
Q: What is deep scaling?
A: It's the removal of calculus, small condensed "rocks" of dirt and bacteria that attach themselves to your teeth. Calculus can be both above the gumline or deep by the roots where you cannot see it. During you regular hygiene appointments the calculus above the gumline can be easily removed. To remove the subgumline calculus, however, a deeper cleaning called deep scaling is necessary. The dentist will give you anesthesia before the deep scaling to prevent any discomfort.
