While headaches are perhaps the most common reason for physician visits, most patients do not usually think of mentioning headaches to their dentist. Muscles controlling the jaw are frequently the site of head and neck pain resulting from a poorly aligned bite. The field of Neuromuscular Dentistry now equips the specially trained and equipped dentist to rule in or rule out imperfections in the bite as a source of headache.
Dr. Irene Lipetsker has recently completed specialized post-graduate training that included studies of headache diagnosis. She has also obtained the specialized, computer based instrumentation that permits her to do precision studies of jaw function and related muscles, both at rest and in function. The tests are non-invasive and painless. Once it is determined that the bite is the cause, a temporary appliance is worn to reposition the jaw and prove the effectiveness of the new position. Later, dental procedures are considered as a means of permanent treatment – often completely eliminating the need for medication.
Dr. Irene Lipetsker cautions that not every headache is dental-related. She works with the patient’s physician to first be sure that a more serious medical condition does not exist. Then the new knowledge and instrumentation allows her to rule in or rule out a poor bite as a source of the headaches.
